Hey, my lovelies.

The summer is over, stepping aside for autumn. The days are getting shorter and darker. Many people really can’t stand this. My friend Ronny for instance spends the winter in India, which really makes me jealous. But for all those amongst you who miss summer: The next summer will come, for sure. But now, you have to grit your teeth and take it as it comes. Well, the worst thing about winter is the autumn or winter blues, which many of us have to endure. I recently heard that one in four is suffering from this phenomenon. Well, in fact, it does have something to do with the weather and sun exposure. Less sun exposure means that less serotonin is produced, which can lead to a lack of drive and tiredness, a grim mood, an increased need for sleep and the need for more carbohydrates and sweets. Typical symptoms of the winter blues.

One interesting theory about the autumn blues comes from the American psychiatrist Dr Whybrow. He assumes that this condition is caused by our body preparing for a kind of hibernation which however doesn’t kick in. In fall and winter, less daylight causes the epiphysis to produce more melatonin which is responsible for our sleep rhythm. Well, if it comforts you: In spring, this depression will go away on its own.

Well, how the hell can I cure my autumn blues before spring kicks in? Well, actually you have to start where every healthier lifestyle begins: You should eat healthier and exercise. Unfortunately you really don’t have the motivation to resist hamburgers and fries and chocolate and go jogging on a daily basis. Well, nobody wants you to run marathons. Step by step, you can reach your goal of a healthier lifestyle. Run around the block two times and reward yourself by relaxing afterwards and watching your favorite film.

Colors and fragrances will help you get through winter as well. Don’t underestimate the effect of a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Trust me, the colors and beautiful fragrances will definitely brighten up your mood. Decorate your apartment with flowers and other colorful things which can make your interior look brighter and more cheerful. Some doctors even offer light therapies to make this depression go away. You can even buy light therapy lamps which will stimulate your retina and epiphysis to produce more serotonin.

What method helps you the most?

I really wish you a beautiful autumnal week!

Lucy
