“Herr von Grau“ was a German Rap Duo consisting of Benny who was responsible for the Rap and the Beats and Kraatz who did the DJing, beats and worked as the manager. Sadly, Herr von Grau broke up in 2014.
What definitely defined their rap style and made their music special was the choice of subjects and the illustration of the chosen topics in their surprisingly funny lyrics which impressed with an incredible complexity. Herr von Grau really focused on every topic the public complained about but also every subject which is associated with joy and happiness. Be it social criticism or the general call to be more human and act more humanely – Herr von Grau rapped about everything which moved the general public.
Herr von Grau once called themselves a professional garage band, which is a more or less appropriate definition if you ask me because of the topics they chose. This is real rap, but it’s no stereotypical rap. Instead of using rap slang, Herr von Grau emphasized the power of the ordinary, elevated German language.
Of course, the independent duo ran their own label because they didn’t want anyone to influence their work. In the end, it came down to what Benny and Kraatz wanted. Awesome rap. Well, I have nothing against tits, money, ghettos, Tupac and Bushido, but if you want to listen to unconventional and down-to-earth rap, you should give Herr von grau a try.
