Stuck in a freezing snowy wasteland without a tent on your person? Congratulations, you’ve just signed your own death warrant! Well, not if you learn these cool moves and survive the snow – by making use of the snow! Sounds weird, but it’s definitely legitimate.
First, dig a hole – it shouldn’t be too wide. You can stabilize your new shelter by tramping down the snow on the walls. Try to do so neatly; otherwise you’ll end up being buried in freshly collapsed snow.
Now, there are two possibilities: you can either wrap up warmly, or light a fire. The latter should only be an option if you’ve prepared an outlet in your shelter. The fire shouldn’t be too big; else you will suffocate in your sleep. The warmth from the fire should be just enough to defrost the surrounding snow just a tiny bit – the water should then quickly solidify to ice, which reflects warmth very well.
If you’ve got blankets with you, you should cover yourself up with as many of them as possible. Provided that the snow shelter is sufficiently stable, you should now have enough protection to get yourself through the night.
Ah, one last thing – if you’re trapped under the snow and don’t know which way to dig to get to the surface, simply spit – you’ll easily be able to see which way is up.
