chantelle

Hello fellow beauty lovers.

Following the 21st instalment of America’s Next Topmodel a lot of people were proven that being different does not necessarily mean being ugly. Chantelle Brown-Young aka. Winnie Harlow was one of the contestants at ANTM, even the audience’s darling. Her secret weapon: her obvious skin disease. Most people lookt at her and are fascinated, some are terrified. But most of them don’t know the backgrounds of this disease.

Vitiligo is a chronic, noncontagious dermatosis in which antibodies are formed that destroy pigment cells and leave white spots on the skin. They are usually symmetrically arranged, for instance on both hands or both hollows of the knee. There are no known limitations to the muscular effort or lifespan but the disease is known to be incurable. There are however treatments that can slow down the spread of the illness like: skin transplants, radiotherapy, medication or color correction for which Michael Jackson who himself suffered from Vitiligo should be the most famous example.

Only 0.5 – 2% of the worldwide population are affected, which is precisely why Chantelle is that special. She did not hide or was ashamed of her disease, she publicly showed her courage and beauty and was rewarded for that. Beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder.

Yours truly,

Lana Hoang
