Valentine’s Day – between desire and reality

English version

Valentine’s Day: For some of us it’s only commercial, but for others it’s the chance of a romantic declaration of love. However, a survey* of the international online booking portal hotel.de reveals a distinctly big gap between desire and reality.

Approximately 60% of the participants of the survey said that they celebrate Valentine’s Day and that they plan surprises. However, while 26.3% act from conviction, 32.7% only do it for the sake of their partner. Anti-Valentine’s Day members don’t want to be told when they have to be romantic and generous. For them, February 14 is only commercial.

It’s interesting to see the difference between what they wish for Valentine’s Day and what they actually give their beloved ones. Flowers are bought the most (23%, 3% are really delighted), but only 7.5% of the ones who are given the flowers. Classics like chocolate (7.5%) and perfumes (6.9%) aren’t that popular as they seem to be. The second one only reaches the eigth rank of the wish list (2.5%).

Number one is a romantic stay at a hotel or a trip (56%), but this only becomes reality for 17% of the presentees. Nevertheless, the reason is not only the budget. 40% want to spend between 26 and 50 euros; 20% would even spend more. You can also benefit from a 50 to 70 per cent discount on booking portals (e.g. hotel.de’s deals) to get an affordable stay at a hotel. There are for example cheap offers for wellness programs in the Elsass or in Graz (http://deals.hotel.de).

Paris, the city of love, is still in great demand. 54.2% would like to spend Valentine’s Day there.

What makes a romantic hotel room?

According to 63.3% of the interviewees, the room has to offer a big bed. 50% want to stay at a calm place. A perfect stay is completed with a whirlpool, bathtub (41.2%) as well as champagne, strawberries and chocolate (35.4%). Soft music (14.7%) and candles (27.7%) follow them with a wide distance.
71.6% share the opinion that the hotel has to offer a wellness area. Additionally, 47.8% need a restaurant in the hotel to complete their Valentine’s Day with a candle-light-dinner.
