The pretty much biggest sacrifice I had to make after becoming vegan was definitely giving up on all kinds of wonderful sweets and candy. The selection of vegan snacks you can buy in regular grocery stores is really limited. Are much as I know there are some sorts of dark chocolate and some kinds of crisps and that’s pretty much it. Thank God there still are the classic Oreo cookies. Those are in fact vegan, which many people still don’t know. But since I’m a real sweet tooth and since I don’t really eat potato crisps I ate so many Oreo’s and dark chocolate that I really started hating them. But still I didn’t want to live without my beloved sweets.
In Summer I visited a vegan street festival in Leipzig. There were lots of stalls giving information about mass animal husbandry or animal welfare (for example from PETA2!). But also many little snack stands offering vegan food were present. One of them even offered lots of vegan chocolate and fruit bars. I was so happy and bought at least one exemplar of each kind.
So overall I discovered the great taste of Vego Chocolate and Lifebars. Vego Chocolate is chocolate made of rice milk filled with hazelnuts. The good thing about it: You can buy it in almost every health food store around. The less good thing is: Indeed it does taste chocolaty but not quite like real chocolate. But still it is super delicious.
Lifebars are fruit bars that for the most part are made of dates. There are incredibly many flavors offered, even hemp. Nonetheless, it’s not that easy to find those bars in regular grocery stores. I think the Veganz supermarket has them but otherwise you have to order them online. This is possible via Amazon.com but I recommend ordering them on vegan-wonderland.de, which also offers lots and lots of other vegan candy.
I am convinced that both chocolate bars and fruit bars are a delicious alternative to all the animal product candies even for carnivores and vegetarians and also they are a relatively healthy snack if you are on the road!
