I got introduced to the Englishman by a mutual acquaintance. After said acquaintance took me to one of his concerts, I knew that this man was a very special musician. Thus, I decided to ask Sam Dale some questions about music.
According to Sam, he and his band don’t pursue a particular music genre. He just wants to do honest and good music. If you feel the urge to categorize his music however, you can say that his music comes close to Folk. Nonetheless, he places value on putting his own personality and individuality into his music instead of following directions. You can literally feel this individuality if you go to one of the concerts of Sam’s band the “Femininist”.
“The Femininist” is kind of a side project. The completely male band who are around 30 years old performs in women’s clothing, radiating a lot of creative energy when being on stage. Sam says: “it means a kind of nuclear kick that keeps getting bigger and bigger as everyone whips each other up, it goes in a terrible circle.” Sam taught himself playing the guitar because he just felt like it.
His concerts take place in all kinds of establishments including bars. I attended one of his concerts in “Kaffee Burger” in the Torstraße 60. This is one of THE pubs in Berlin if it comes to typically Berlin culture. Except for the prices, nothing changed since the GDR. The interior design has been completely preserved and definitely bestows a special charm upon the place. Apart from concerts, a reading event takes place every Sunday founded by the legendary Wladimir Kaminer.
