This is an ultimate insider’s tip hidden in a backyard at the Adenauer Platz in Berlin. What I’m talking about is the tavern “Kurpfalz Weinstuben”. After passing by the Wilmersdorfer Straße and entering the backyard idyll, a typical beer garden and snack atmosphere immediately overwhelms you. You start to forget that you are in the middle of a metropolis, in which 3.5 Million people live. This establishment seems so authentic; it could as well be situated in a village with 1000 inhabitants in Palatinate. http://kurpfalz-weinstuben.de/

“After the Second World War it was a popular meeting point for the stars of the old West Berlin. In the guest book you can find names such as Hans Albers, Hildegard Knef, Curd Jürgens and Harald Juhnke. “ Since 1957 “… the establishment is under the control of Rainer P. S. Schulz, gastronomer from Hamburg, who runs the “Palatinate village in Berlin” with a lot of passion and his love for wine. “

“… Rainer Schulz also is an excellent consultant when it comes to wine. There are 50 open wines, the palette of bottles ranges from the simple Palatinate pub wine to exclusive rarities, which even are marveled at by ambitious wine drinkers. “

This is the image which the passionate gastronomer presents proudly. Never refraining from saying a word about good wine or his dishes, it is not only the rustic interior design which creates the homey charm of a regular’s table, but it is also the open and hearty words by Mister Schulz which truly breathe life into this tavern. All in all, the passion about wine which you can literally feel upon entering the Kurpfalz Weinstuben is what fascinates the customers who certainly do not dislike the drink of gods. Wine is pure pleasure!

The fortunately manageable selection of dishes truly is impressive. Why? Would you have known what Stelzenfleisch is without googling it on your smart phone?

I wouldn’t. That’s why I ordered this dish. Stelzenfleisch turned out to be pork leg meat which was served and completed with very intensive tomato sauerkraut. But before I dug into this meaty experience, I had a Riesling soup in which two small potato dumplings and a massive chunk of pork were swimming. What can I say? It was pure bliss. In order to perfect my meal, I banally ordered a Riesling, semi-dry. Well, I felt like drinking a glass of Riesling. However, it indeed was a very delicious choice, paired with the Riesling soup and the tomato sauerkraut of the entrée.

Wine is Mister Schulze’s passion and my passion is soups. Nonetheless, Mister Schulze seems to know how to combine both worlds, because the Riesling soup simply blew me away. An excellent, aromatic and delicious, slightly sour taste, which was topped with enough heat and piquancy, marked the semi-clear broth. In particular, when I drank a sip from my Riesling before digging into the soup, the deliciousness climaxed.

In addition to the main course, we received knives and forks. But the knives were not necessary at all, because the meat seemed so wonderfully soft and delicate, it fell apart under the light pressure of the fork. I ate my Stelzenfleisch without dumplings, potato dishes or other side dishes. Who has the opportunity to dine in the Weinstuben at least once, knows that the meat tastes better when eaten purely with the tastiness of the meat juice. Only the tomato sauerkraut with its sweetness completes the delicious pork.

As dessert, a warm apple tart sprinkled over with calvados and topped by a scoop of vanilla ice cream was served to us. And it was heavenly.

The “Schlachtfest” which means butcher festival ends on September 22th. However, the next event is awaiting us on October 3rd: “Meister Lampe meets his friends”. On October 31st the event “Back from the hunt” is on the agenda. Since the “Gänsekeulenmarathon” begins on December 12th, I recommend booking a table beforehand to you.

The Kurpfalz Weinstuben is a tavern which truly deserved its success. With a price of €12 to €16 per dish, you still have enough financial room for wine. However, it has to be mentioned, that you definitely have to fill your purse with cash money because debit cards and credit cards are not accepted.
