Die diesjährige Award-Saison hat begonnen. Am Freitagabend wurden die 34. Golden Joystick Awards verliehen und eröffnen damit wie im Vorjahr die Saison der Game-Awards. Die Verleihung fand im Londoner indigO2 statt und wurde von Comedian James Veitch moderiert. Anstatt eine „Experten-Jury“ über die Preisträger entscheiden zu lassen, stimmten in den letzten Wochen Millionen Menschen innerhalb eines Online-Votings für ihre Gaming-Highlights des Jahres ab.
Spiel des Jahres wurde From Softwares Dark Souls 3. Auch der dritte Ableger der düsteren, für ihren schonungslosen Schwierigkeitsgrad bekannten Fantasy-Rollenspielreihe zieht die Spieler in ihren Bann. Abräumer des Abends war allerdings Blizzards Team-Shooter Overwatch, welcher in insgesamt fünf Kategorien an der Spitze landete. Das Fantasy-Rollenspiel The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Blood and Wine erhielt 2 Auszeichnungen, wobei Entwickler CD Projekt RED zusätzlich als Studio des Jahres ausgezeichnet wurde. Nintendo und Niantics Pokémon GO sicherte sich ebenfalls zwei Auszeichnungen, Handheld/Mobile Game of the Year und Innovation des Jahres.
