As tradition goes, Berlinale has a wide variety of different kinds of promising movies. One of those is the fourth film by Jeff Nichols, director of highly acclaimed works like “Mud“ or “Take Shelter“.

His new movie “Midnight Special“ tells the tale of a father, who is trying to save his son from the grip of a government secret agency and a group of religious extremist. That is because of his son, played by child actor Jaeden Lieberher, who has developed some kind of supernatural powers, which are, according to whom you ask, to be used as a weapon or are promoting the child to some kind of spiritual leader.

Even though Nichols changes his genre, he stays true to the things he would like to show his audience, which is the paranoia and violence of the American countryside. Skilled in is craft Nichols is able to potray the loving relationship of a father towards his son, even in the face of powerlessness towards such powerful institutions like the government or religious cults.

Even though the storyline of “Midnight Special“ was long held secret, it was anticipated by movie goers and critics all over the world because of its cast, which features stars like Michael Shannon, Kristin Dunst, Joel Edgerton, Adam Driver and Sam Sheppard.
