It is that time of the year again. From November 25 until December 2, the Russian Movie Week will take place in Berlin. Eleven motion pictures as well as a wide range of documentaries and short movies will officially represent the Russian cinematic art.

The opening movie this year will be “Battle for Sewastopol”. It promises a dramatic and moving tale of a Soviet sniper during the Second World War. The film was produced in Russia and Ukraine, two countries where the movie is already screening in with quite a success. Movies that depict stories during the time of the Second World War seem to dominate the Russian Movie Week in general.

However, youth dramas, comedies and other genres are also present.

One of the most interesting examples for me personally is “Orleans”, an incredibly quaint work of art that appears very comical thanks to its unique style. Another great example is the black and white drama by director Stanislaw Govoruchin, “The End of the Belle Epoque”. It deals with oppression and poetic licenses during the times of the Soviet Union.

The Russian movie week offers all film enthusiasts and your normal cinema lovers the chance to think out of the box and dip their toes into the world of the Russian cinematography.
