Art is timeless. It can survive thousands upon thousands of years, recreating memories of bygone times and immortalising its artist forever. And then there’s Andres Amador’s art: it’s literally dust in the wind. It lasts for only a few seconds before disappearing forever, never to be see again.

With the help of a rake he creates kaleidoscopic patterns on beaches. They unfurl to reveal their magnificence only when viewed from the air. And when the tide comes in to engulf the land, it drags the painstakingly created works of art down to the depths of the sea. Amador’s art is complete and perfect for only a few short moments, and their short lifespans makes them all the more marvelous.

For over ten years, this San Francisco-based artist has been raked beaches when the tide goes out. The sand can’t be too dry, either -the outlines won’t be clear then. He points out that he’s excited by the results everytime, because the wind, the humidity and the sand will always have some surprises up their sleeve.

His largest work so far was almost as massive as a soccer field – from up close, all the patterns, flowers and curves looked like random lines. After each session he pilots a drone to capture pictures of his artwork from the air.

Here’s a tip: if you’re thinking about proposing to your loved one at the beach, why not get Andres Amador to do something with his rake beforehand? Imagine the pictures!
