Melodie McDaniel – Fashion Photographers 2014
Melodie McDaniel’s pictures could be part of a script for a film noir, which would include characters like James Dean or artists from the alternative and creative Parisian district Montmartre. Delicate balconies are for example used as settings for cheekily posing models in black-and-white while they are smoking their cigarettes under the city air of Paris. At the same time, you also see the film noir’s delicate and fragile character. Boyish Lolitas veil themselves in soft curtains and wear only unbuttoned silk blouses or light pants.
On the other hand, Melodie McDaniel also presents a youthful, rebellious side, which seems to show youth life in the 60ies. This impression, which has already been developed in the denim-inspired fashion series, is highlighted by the Polaroid series. Popular people that have been depicted on the pictures are Janet Jackson, Quentin Tarantino and a lot of unknown faces, which still arouse a lot of interest. One really starts to wonder about Melodie McDaniel’s age. Did she also witness the mid of the 20th century or does she only create authentic-looking pictures typical of these epochs?
Indeed, she was born in the 60ies, to be exact in 1967. This is why she really likes to integrate elements and looks of this era into her work. Especially singers like Rihanna, Pharell and Steve Buscemi appreciate her for her deep and contrasty style, which you really don’t want to call “vintage” or “retro”. Her works appear way too thrilling to be pigeonholed, just because they are depicted in the sepia look, in black-and-white, in the Polaroid-look or sometimes just look gritty.
After Melodie McDaniel, who was born in LA, finished her studies in photography at the California Art Center College for Design, she decided to continue to study photography. As she was inspired by going to Europe and Israel, she also did documentation photography and nowadays works as a movie director.

Besonders Sänger wie Rihanna, Pharell und Charakter-Schauspieler wie Steve Buscemi schätzen sie für ihren tiefschürfenden und kontrastreichen Stil, den man sich gar nicht traut, mit ‘Vintage’ oder ‘Retro’ zu betiteln. Nachdem die in Los Angeles geborene Melodie McDaniel einen Abschluss für Fotografie am California Art Center College für Design erwirkte, beschloss sie, ein Studium für Fotografie anzuhängen. Inspiriert von ihren Destinationen nach Europa und Israel, ging sie ebenfalls der Dokumentationsfotografie nach und arbeitet heut auch als Filmregisseurin.
