Steven Meisel is an American illustrator and photographer. After graduating at Parsons School of Design – one of the most famous universities for fashion located in New York – he worked as an illustrator, when he found another passion in 1980, photography.
From this day on, he has been creating photographs which probably went down in history. Steven Meisel is considered one of the most poignant fashion photographers of our time and with his work he’s brought models such as Naomi Campbell, Kristen McMenamy and Lily Cole to the very top.
Today he works as the head of photography at the Italian Vogue, where he’s been shooting multiple covers ever since 1988. And today, he’s on the cover. I guess this wouldn’t have been possible in his rebellious past. He even started his carrier in quite a provocative way with Madonna, some countries even considered his works pornography.
And to this day his provoking touch is still seen in some of his pictures, however he doesn’t focus on sex – these days you won’t shock anyone with that. It’s a bloody nose, a black eye and a grazed knee what surprises us. Steven Meisel, as the head of photography at the Italian Vogue, has risen to the top of the fashion world. I guess every artist goes through a pornographic phase and Meisel is no different. Nowadays it’s more about aesthetics and the charm and amusing snapshots however.
