1913 während des Wirtschaftsbooms errichtet, war das Bahnhofsgebäude damals das größte seiner Art. Bis in die 40er Jahre rein war es einer der wichtigsten Zentralbahnhöfe des Landes, doch in den 50er Jahren wurde es zunehmend bedeutungsloser. Als Verkaufsaktionen scheiterten, wurde das Gebäude schließlich dem Verfall preis gegeben. Als man 2009 beschloss, das Gebäude abzureißen, wurde von der Bevölkerung heftig dagegen protestiert. Immerhin ist der Bahnhof ein Wahrzeichen der Stadt. Heutzutage dient er der urbanen Kultur wie Skateboardern und Sprayern als Stützpunkt, aber auch Obdachlose, Roadtriper und andere Abenteurer nutzen das Gebäude. im Jahre 2011 wurde beschlossen, das Gebäude zu sanieren.
Zudem diente es in mehreren Filmen als Kulisse („Die Insel“, „Transformers“, „4 Brüder“ usw. )

During the economic boom in 1913, the established station building was the largest of its kind. Until the mid-40s, it was one of the essential central stations of the country, losing its significance. When an auction failed, it was left for disposal. In 2009, it was decided to demolish the construction but the citizens strongly protested against that. After all, this train station is a landmark of the city. Nowadays, it serves the urban culture, functioning as basement for skateboarders and graffiti artists, but also homeless people, road trippers and other adventurers. This building was closed in 2011 for reconstruction.
Moreover, it served as film set for many Hollywood production, such as “The Island”, “Transformers” “Four Brothers” and many more.
